NEWS | NSBA Urges Congress to Choose Compromise, Small Business to Avoid Shutdown

NSBA |

Shutdowns harm small business - plain and simple. Congress must act to keep the government funded and prioritize support for the nation's most important economic community.

As the Sept. 30 deadline to fund the government draws closer, Republican (GOP) and Democratic lawmakers remain in disagreement over the best path forward.

Both parties introduced competing short-term measures that would allow for more time to negotiate a full-year bill:

  • GOP members introduced a “clean” seven-week continuing resolution (CR) bill that would simply extend current funding levels.

  • Democrats put forth their own four-week extension bill that also includes additional policy provisions and party priorities.

While the GOP possesses majorities in both chambers of Congress, the 7-week bill was, nonetheless, defeated in the Senate when two Republican lawmakers voted against it, citing budget and policy concerns.

If Congress fails to advance any funding legislation before Sep. 30 and a government shutdown takes effect, small businesses around the country will face major disruptions, including lending delays and general market uncertainty.

NSBA urges Congress to swiftly advance legislation that would fund the government and protect small businesses from further economic risk.
